Course Description

In a one-hour, interactive program, Today’s Intrauterine Contraception… Not Your Mother’s IUD, Dr. David Grimes examines some of the latest research on copper and hormone-releasing intrauterine contraceptives, the two intrauterine contraceptives (IUCs) available in Canada. Dr. Grimes first summarizes the method of action of both IUCs, and then explains how to screen and counsel patients to determine who is an appropriate candidate. Through three patient studies, the program addresses safety issues such as the risk of pelvic inflammatory disease, and use of IUCs in breastfeeding women. Dr. Grimes also examines the efficacy of various contraceptives as well as the speed of return to fertility after an IUC is removed.

Learning Objectives

Following this program, participants will be able to:

  • State the mechanism of action of hormonal and copper intrauterine contraceptives (IUCs)
  • Compare the effectiveness of IUCs to other contraceptive methods
  • Identify appropriate candidates for IUC use
  • Counsel patients about IUCs
